All photos courtesy of Beach Boulevard Skate Arena/Nicole Esposito. I apologize that those photos are very grainy and faded due to age of the photos plus chemicals changed plus color films in the 1970s/1980s were not all that fantastic. It is also fuzzy. Not clear. Use your imagination how it was like clearly.
Beach Boulevard Skate Arena, 11000 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL
Apparently named after the street the rink was held. It was at a shopping plaza where Beach Boulevard Concert Hall and Aqua is now located. It began in 1970s according to many skaters on Facebook but not sure exactly when. Need evidence or proof of open. Only I got from Bizapedia saying it started in 1987. By the sound of people saying in Facebook, it goes back further to 1970s. This plaza had several entertainment as I noticed. One area was a Billiard hall. Aqua I believe is a night club. And the other entertainment is a Beach Boulevard Comedy Club. Apparently this plaza's management prefer to focus on entertainment and recreation.
Unfortunately, the rink had their final skate which was on June 22, 1991.
Judy And Skip Laun were the owners and operators.. Skip was the first owner/operator, manager, designer & builder Beach Boulevard Skate Arena. This source was from Walt Laun. Likely their son as said on Facebook. They owned many other rinks in Florida, New York State, and New Jersey according to Nicole.
The exterior at the time may have appeared different than the exterior today appears. so I have no idea what it is like. And the interior. The photos shown above are hard to see and I can understand that you have hard time seeing them. Blurred and grainy. It appeared to be Rustic Red-Orange carpets on half walls,... floor.. It was a maple wood floor with fan layout on each ends of the rink.
A certain time they had White walls and Navy Blue half-walls. I wish I can post those photos but there are skaters in that picture.
The murals.. beautiful art work. One was a very big wave with a surfer surfing on this wall in snack bar area while there is a Great White Shark mural painting (very realistic!) painted on another wall. Clearly the place was quite Rustic Red-Orange with Dark Ocean Blue. Very interesting combination I must say.
On December 3, 2018, a small corner of the plaza roof collapsed where the former Skate Arena was once held. It just collapsed. I am sure it is being repaired as we speak.
Now occupied by two clubs.
