Arcadia (Arena) Roller Rink 30 Amherst Street East, Buffalo, NY. Whew, he made it but never ever do that again, man! Folks, please never ever make such jumps like this ever! Not at a rink! Otherwise, rink operators will start putting Plexiglas on all rails so you cannot make any jumps over for insurance reasons. Understand. Dead-Rinks is not responsible for this action and/or yours out there. Thank you for your understanding. (See next two photos below and watch YouTube what he has done). Otherwise, rink operators will start putting Plexiglas on all rails so you cannot make any jumps over for insurance reasons. You could force a rink to close because they cannot afford insurance. Arcadia (Arena) Roller Rink 30 Amherst Street East, Buffalo, NY
This rink was one of older rinks in Buffalo that was set up shop on 30 Amherst Street. There are almost no information at all. Except an article and a sticker from the rink. That was all exist. However, the phone book for Greater Buffalo area in 1979 showed seven roller rinks. Arena was one of them along with just one rink still in operations. Please read the article that was published on The Buffalo News.
Clearly the rink closed sometimes in 1979 or later. There are no photographs of when it was opened, nothing. Please notify me of the rink's information and photos and I will add to this collection of rinks.
I found on Google Map the rink that has the name still on there as of September 2014. It showed the name Arcadia instead of Arena that the sticker says or the long list of rinks provided by http://www.videoparadise-sanjose.com/1990skating.htm
The building looked 1930s. Maybe 1920s? The arched curve building was not smooth arched. But rather flatted Dutch Gable roof from front to rear. It has a early 20th Century style and fonts for the name, Arcadia. It showed an arched fonts for the name. The colors at the closing was white walls with royal blue trims and door. It appeared long in the photo. That was because they included the restrooms, admissions, office, and snack bar area.
There was a sign to inform parents their responsibility to pick up children.
Clearly the rink lasted quite a long time because of the sticker (looks too new though).
I think the sticker was a hoax because of the name and location. It says Main at Amherst. Arcadia was on EAST Amherst but far from Main Street. See aerial photo.
UPDATE: Owner is going to revive the rink with new additions to the rink with bumper cars and laser tag. (The Buffalo News, December 2018)
It is currently Zone One Entertainment Center according to Google Search and Map.
It was up for sale on 28 July 07 2017. It was sold in December 2018 to become that new entertainment center. Sold 'As-is' at an asking price of 450,000 USD in 2017.
Interior:
It had beautiful Rotunda Hardwood Maple floor, non painted, Polyurethane coated. It was a Rectangular shaped with cut corners as I call that. That is, like, fan shaped.
It had Dark Red carpet half-wall with Christmas light-like above the carpet all around plus standard disco lights above. They had cinderblocks wall and half-wall as well. Yes, a skater did made the jump over that rail at this rink successfully. That is extremely dangerous and never ever do that at at roller rink. Think about insurance policy!
This rink had a real nice warm feeling décor in there with the colors they had. Deep Red makes the place feel warm even with the cold snowy Buffalo winters they had. (Yes, even they are leading in the snow amount contest for the winter of 2021-2022. That is so far as of 06 February 2022-- winter is not over yet!)
Exterior:
The exterior looks smaller than really is yet it had 20,283 Square Feet which is pretty big for a local mom-and-pop type of rink. It is a good sized interior as I described above about the interior. It has pretty low roof though for this place. It has a Gambrel Roof with possible Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblock Building.
Rink Size: N/A Floor: Non-painted, Polyurethane Coated Urethane coated Hardwood Maple.
Floor Layout: Rotunda with Angled Corners Rectangular.
Building Size: 20,283 SF. Built: N/A. Renovations: N/A. Demolished: None. Still standing.
Type of Building: Free-Span Steel Trusses Cinderblock Building.
Roof: Dutch Gable
Acres: 1.1700 AC. (Lot size is 133' x 182')
Operated: Maybe 1920s to July 2017.
Reason for Closure: N/A
Wanted: More information and photos of exterior and interior. Please email them to [email protected]. Thank you!
