Angelo Skate and Fun Center 34 Buick Street, San Angelo, TX
Angelo Skate and Fun Center 34 Buick Street, San Angelo, TX just closed in June 2021. This rink closes on Sunday 27 June 2021.
It first opened in 2003 according to LoopNet (built date) and in 2000s according to a newspaper online, Go San Angelo. UPDATE! -- 08 July 2022. Someone said it was around 2005 when it first opened. Pretty close to accurate.
This FEC (Family Entertainment Center) was more than just a roller rink. Besides the rink, it had mini-golf, go-kart, laser tag, an arcade, and of course every once a while, a bounce house. It sat in a corner where it was all industrial and commercial area next to a car dealership.
DISCLAIMER- What you are about to read below is about a controversy. This is what reflexed from the Yelp commenters who posted about an incident that occurred on 10 June 2018 involving with the mother, the boy who hit the ball a little hard that hit another boy and that angered the father. Dead-Rinks only giving the facts seen from Yelp.
There was a huge controversy as seen on Yelp that it occurred on that day that there was a little boy who hit the ball a little too hard and it flew and hit another little boy at the mini golf. This angered the father of the boy who got hit by a golf ball and the father was threatened to beat up the boy who hit the ball too hard and the mother too. There were numerous of witnesses and friends with the victims of the assault. However, the owner of the rink seemly to be on the father and the injured boy's side and called the police to arrest the mother and the little boy for hitting the ball too hard. There are at least half dozen or so on Yelp talking about the incident they witnessed. The police did come and listened to the whole story and the police sided with the mother and the boy who hit the ball too hard.
The witnesses said it was clearly borderline racism because the owner and the father and the boy who got hit by golf ball are Caucasian (my opinion) or close and the mother and the boy were not. The father and the boy got their refunds immediately.
Now, my opinion-
This was uncalled for the owner to behave this way. I believe he should have been stripped of his membership to the associations he was member of. I am glad the police sided with the mother and the boy who hit the ball a little too hard. The problem is that the father needed to calm down and have his anger management courses or take the anger pill as they call it out there to calm down angers and also helps narcissists calm too.
The closure this year, exactly three years to the month of the incident apparently did not slow down the business with boycotts. There was never heard of it. Why? The police did the right thing. Because it was clearly not the mother's fault and the boy's fault. Maybe that was his first time. And golf balls as I was told are for mini-golf that are more bouncy than the regulation (regular) golf that you drive around in your golf cart carrying your irons and swing hard like a pro would. No, big difference as I was told. Second of all, I was told with the ball was more hallow. That was what I heard in 1980s when I went to play Putt-Putt® tournament locally, I talked with the guys who have mini golf for years. And the owner too. He admitted to me. This is why I bring my own regulation golf ball to play 17 holes and use their ball for the 18th because that one, you put into and you will never get that one back.
Golf balls can shoot like a cannon ball and clubs itself can be hammered. Weapons if you mistreat it.
Well, maybe mini golf needs to start changing and use soft rubber, larger, and safer balls. Like RollerCourts for roller skating, balls do the same. I had those balls to practice in the small back yard where I grew up so it would not go and break windows. One time I did use my regulation golf ball and I cracked a window. Oops! All taken care of.. so my mom got me those special balls that wont fly at all and full of holes in it. You can still hit like a regulation but it slows down fast. Maybe a good 10 feet or even less.
Ok, now that controversy is set aside. They are closing because of COVID situation.
They had it up for sale since January 2020 according to YouTube but it was up for sale even before that when I first discovered this and put on purple font to say it is an iffy iffy. Now I can confirm this and it is closing. Maybe the controversy really started it all.
On YouTube it said this.. 400 key chains, 5,000 tokens, 18 putting greens, 999 bounce balls, 11 go karts, 17 laser tag vests, 400 pairs of skates [rentals], 4 microphones and a DJ Booth, 20 arcade games, 30 laser lights, 2 mirror balls, 30 new skate cubbies, lockers, go kart track, soda fountains. Wow, that is alot of key chains! Lot of tokens and bounce balls. I know why all those tokens because sometimes people forget and bring home tokens and I see that on tokens website people had them and sell them like a real coin collector would do.
It is closed on Sunday 27, June 2021 for good.
The Interior.
The rink itself was a concrete floor painted in White and protected with Polyurethane coat. The off floor was vinyl with checker design with Deep Blue and Plumb colors. Pretty much Blueness off the rink but on the rink, the ceiling is in Black while the rest were basic graffiti style on the wall. I am not too thrilled with that because of what influence it would be however, I love the space themed laser tag mural on the end of the rink as an advertisement itself to let people know they can do laser tag too besides skating. I explained a lot in the photo gallery.
The snack bar appeared to be big and in Blue color but the skate rental, it is School Bus Yellow.
The Exterior.
Being a FEC, this complex has a Gable roof, Free-Span Steel Trusses Steel-Walled Warehouse - like Building with a 18 hole miniature golf course with a sort of kidney stone shaped go-kart in the rear of th building. The mini-golf sat on the side. The property has a corner that is curved. It had seen changes. Originally all Gray then they added a skater that was a bit hard to see then they had a mural which to me a little off of the center. I do not know why the artist did that because it was not lined with the sign that says, "The Rink" It did appear better mural but still, And Roo driving a car (supposed to be go-kart) instead of skating because Roo is a skater, the official mascot of RSAI, not a Go-Kart assoication's mascot.
I like the appearance of the mini-golf course. Very spacious between holes (a term means each course from tee off to the greens in regulation golf but in mini-golf, the entire course.) But also spacious with the ground that it could fit a 36 hole Putt Putt® courses on.

Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
