Alliance Rollerland Alliance, OH
Alliance Rollerland Alliance, Ohio was once a roller rink in that town. Specific location is still questionable because of what I received in emails from the same person who said different locations each time. So, if any of you really remember where this rink was, please let me know.
First it was opened by Russ Flegle, the original operator in August 1949 according to this Billboard called Rolling Rumblings. Apparently in three short years later, William "Bill" Mooney bought the rink.
It was owned and operated by William "Bill" Mooney and G.G. Smith according to Billboard newspaper on 19 July 1952, page 46.
This rink was established in the basement of a Buick dealership in Alliance, Ohio. It was rather unusual to have a rink under the dealer where they have automobiles in showroom and garage above. In fact, they often had to use buckets to collect water from melting snow on the garage's floor above the rink that was leaking through cracks of the concrete floor above the rink! Or leaky drainage.
Being in Cleveland in the snow belt and near the famed snowiest cities in the nation, this is why they receive all that snow on vehicles and drive in the dealership garage and that is how the rink collected water. Good thing they were smart having the concrete floor with a type of polyurethane coating which is "plastic coating" or even plastic Epoxy coating on the floor.
This is what John told me about this rink when he and his father were at the rink. This is what he said --
Alliance Rollerland was in the basement of a Buick dealer and was owned by Bill Mooney (or at least that space was rented by him because, I assumed, the Buick dealer owned the building). It was located on the SW corner of W Main and N Union where there is currently a Dollar Tree (which was previously a Rite Aid (in 1998, the last time I was there). It had a Dark Bue wood floor which was “plastic coated” [Polyurethane coated or Expoy or Roll-On] (so I was told). I remember in the winter, they would put some buckets on the floor to catch the water dripping through the ceiling, apparently because of snow melting on cars being brought into the shop..
I first knew John and Barbara Sheen who were skaters and students of my dad at Alliance. I remember John, a thin guy who had a rough voice who smoked a lot. Both John and Barb were really nice people. They ended up purchasing Cholley’s rink in Louisville.
The Interior.
It was in the basement of a Buick dealership in Alliance, Ohio. It had a type of plastic floor coating either Roll-On or Epoxy which were popular coating at the time when Polyurethane coating were coming out. It was Dark Blue painted on Concrete floor.
The Exterior.
Of course, it was a Buick dealership you can see on the outside but had an access to the basement to go roller skating there. Many skaters especially teenagers dreamed of owning a car as they walk by al the brand new Buicks in 1949 and the 1950s till when they closed.
