Plaza Arena / Airport Plaza Roller Skating Rink 1390 NJ-36, Hazlet, NJ The appearance I can see was very clear: former Grand Union grocery store. It was common in 1950s and 60s many grocery stores had Segmental Arch. Usually related to Googie's Architecture. Grand Union, Safeway, Acme, you name it. They all had that arch. Airport Plaza Roller Skating Rink 1390 NJ-36, Hazlet, New Jersey. This rink had a history before that...
Victor Scudiery, owner of Interstate Electronics Inc (IEI), bought Airport Plaza in February 1976 for $700,000 and proceeded to renovate what had become a rundown shopping center.
According to page 6 of the 27 October 1976 edition of The Independent, W T Grant's bankruptcy had left a big vacancy in the 20 year old retail site, so Scudiery made space for smaller stores and added professional offices.
Marvin Schneider of Matawan signed a lease to bring a roller rink to fill a large vacancy; the Plaza Arena was set to open in January 1977.
Note, you may will want to check the source below however, you will see the links in that page showed it has dead links.. Therefore no links anymore.
Upon looking at Google Maps. I do not understand why I have that address that is different. I found the real location of the plaza. It is really at 1390 NJ-36, Hazlet, New Jersey. If you check Google Maps with that address and get down to the person eye level, you will see the Segemental Arch STILL there. And the name of the plaza is STILL Airport Plaza. So, the Google Search showed correct address as 1390 NJ-36, Hazlet, New Jersey. NOT 3013 NJ-35, Hazlet, New Jersey. I received that name off of a list and that person got the wrong address and I found with solid evident from Google Map where.
You make the call if this is correct I made.
This spot used to be Grand Union before the roller rink. The roof design and frontage as you can see with Skate Arena clearly was a Grand Union design. Grand Union opened in 1956 and closed in 1976 when the plaza was sold and cleared out old tenants. That was where the roller rink was placed in.
The Interior.
It was 17,000 Square Foot interior a former grocery store turned to roller rink.
The Exterior.
This rink was housed inside the former Grand Union grocery store in a plaza. The appearance has changed a lot since and ou can tell with photographs.

No rink but you can visit the plaza. Check it out and you can spot easily on the outside. Just enjoy the day there and then go eat at Perkins at the end side of the plaza!

Dead Rinks is now International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© because many former names have become new names at the same rinks that are still active and due to much confusion, We have decided that International Roller Skating Rinks History Foundation© fits better for all rinks including defunct, closed, inactive, rebooted, and rinks that are still active today. For short on this site, it is International Roller Skating Rinks History© Bear with us as we change the entire site page by page each day. Thank you for understanding.
Second of all: The contents including words and photos above on this page and/or on any pages are purely educational entertainment purposes only. Rinks that are closed are considered dead. Rinks that are/were sold and with new management names new name(s), the former are considered dead. Previous operating rink that closed but came back years later, are considered dead because the reopening is considered rebooted, nothing to do with the former. Since we are rebooted to allow alive rinks, active rinks, we welcome those active rinks as well. It will be described.
As for “For Office Only” is for my reasoning and private legal reason for that.
